Eron - 29
The eveningâs slumber had not been fluid, leaving Eron tossing and turning throughout the night, the foreign hum of the city beneath him reaching through the barrier of deep sleep more than once. He did not begrudge the interruption entirely. Agar had dwelled in his dreams, his presence heavy and unsettling.
Little different than he was now. Seated beside Eron in the white Range Rover, bulletproof panelling separating the driver from her backseat passengers. The entire vehicle was fortified to ensure that should Agar manage to override the inhibitors, and then somehow overpower Eron and the mea stone, the mobile enclosure would secure itself against its unruly inhabitant and encase the gallu in a tomb on wheels. Eron squinted into the late-morning sunshine. The predictors of weather had been accurate. The day was clear and bright. Multitudes of humans went about their mundane daily tasks, and Eron stifled the low ripple of longing that ran through him.
âOne minute until arrival, sir.â
Eron acknowledged the driver with a nod.
He glanced at his reflection in the tinted window. A pair of eyes, dreadfully plain brown, stared back at him. His long silver hair was braided and tucked up under a black cap with a red logo on the front. A music band. One heâd heard of, but he kept that knowledge to himself. Mentioning it would only draw attention to his time beyond Facility walls. With a pair of tight faded jeans, a white long-sleeved T-shirt with an advertisement for a soda on the front, and heavy-soled black boots, he was, so far as he was concerned, remarkably unimpressive to anyone glancing his way. He slid on a pair of black sunglasses and patted his waist, feeling the press of the margate fixed in its holster. It was similar in ways to the Taser used by humans, though the margate would melt internal organs if Eron desired such a result. He moved his attention to the two bracelets clinging to his right wrist, edging them away from the bony joint there. One was a simple inhibitor bracelet. But the other, a Telteriun cuff, was much more.
He was ready. Though his pulses, all out of sync, suggested otherwise.
The vehicle drew to a stop on the second level of a car park, affording them a view of the starting point of the parade. Further down the road, organisers tried valiantly to control the vast array of vehicles and humans lining up in wait for the go-ahead to begin their movement through the city. The costumes and vehicles being guided into the town square, where the parade would begin, were a veritable rainbow of colours and elaborate designs. A sky of perfect clear blue hung over them, the sun perched high above the skyscrapers. The crowds were already at a considerable thickness alongside the road, exuberant, vocal specimens.
Oblivious.
Eron took a moment to regulate his breathing before he triggered the Bind. Wishing to make a point, he decided against subtlety and was rewarded when Agar jerked, head snapping back like a sleeper doused with ice-cold water.
